Just as she finished her last piece of toast, a knock sounded off on the door to Scarlett’s apartment. Her heart did the samba in her chest, but she pressed a hand over the front of her dark-green tank top to cover the commotion. Eli had said he wanted to stick to business. She could totally do that. They’d be professional. Polite. Work only.

But the perfectly professional, perfectly polite greeting Scarlett had worked up in her head completely disintegrated at the sight of Eli standing on her doorstep with a charming-as-hell smile on his face and a brown paper bag in his hand.

“Morning.” He extended the bag, looking hotter than anyone had a right to. Seriously, who made a hoodie and a pair of banged-up jeans sexy? At five o’clock in the morning? It just wasn’t right.

“What’s this?” she blurted as she took the bag from his outstretched hand, and God, could she be any more graceless?

If Eli was bothered by her distinct lack of a filter, though, he sure didn’t show it. “This is a vegan breakfast burrito.” He paused, tipping his blond head slightly as he added, “And we can add that to the list of things I never thought I’d say.”

Scarlett blinked, trying to piece the words together in a way that made sense. “You bought me a vegan breakfast burrito?”

“No. I made you a vegan breakfast burrito.”

The shock pumping through her veins must’ve taken a detour over her face, because Eli took one look at her and backpedaled. “Okay, sort of. I went up to the main house an hour ago to get a bunch of crates that didn’t fit in the box truck, and Owen was making breakfast burritos. I helped him come up with one for you that fits the bill.”

“Why?”

Scarlett clamped down on her lip just a second too late to bite down on the overly bold question, but to her surprise, Eli just laughed.

“What, is breakfast some sort of sacrilege once you cross the Mason-Dixon Line or something?”

Seriously, she needed to build some sort of immunity to that here-comes-trouble smile of his. Either that or she was going to have to head back to that cute little town where she’d gotten her coffeepot for some cute little batteries to fuel her cute little vibrator.

“No! Nope, mmm-mmm,” she barked, chasing the burn from her cheeks with a sweep of her fingertips. Sure, Eli was good-looking (Fine. He was sex on a stick. Potato-potahto). But they needed to stay professional. That’s what he’d said he wanted.

Only from the look of the cocky, come-and-get-it smile on his face right now, Scarlett wasn’t so sure he’d meant a single word.

Advanced Praise for The Way It Hurts:

"Blount writes authentically; both protagonists’ voices are distinct. The author explores the rapidly consuming world of social media and how it affects relationships online and in real life. A relevant read and must-have for all YA collections." – School Library Journal

"THE WAY IT HURTS draws our attention to the joy, heartache and confusing contradictions that arise as we try to find our place in the real world and the virtual one." – Kimberly Sabatini

“Elijah and Kristen’s personal evolutions through the novel, along with their chemistry, feel as authentic as the conflicts they face. A genuine plot filled with steady tension that will keep readers hooked.” – RT Book Reviews

“This book sensitively covers topics such as sexism, handicapping conditions, communication, and ageism. Agency is also shown when Kristen says she wants to pursue studying in a conservatory rather than continue in the band and the three young men acknowledge her wish. Talking about what bothers us rather than trying to guess another person’s feelings is demonstrated through the actions of the characters. The characters’ issues are eventually resolved through hard work and understanding, making this an interesting and informative read." – School Library Connection

Excerpt:

Elijah took my hands. “Okay, look. Maybe you’re right. Maybe these people are taking this whole battle thing way too seriously. If you’re scared, then we’ll stop. No more posts except for appearance information.”
“So no more battle of the sexes, no more make Kris scream?”
He held up his hand. “Swear to God.”
“Okay.” I sighed in relief. “You’d really do that?”
He leaned closer and repeated the vow. “I promise, Kris.”
And just like that, I forgot why I was mad at him. I couldn’t talk, couldn’t breathe, couldn’t even blink because I was afraid he’d let go. This was the part of him I adored. I clung to him for a long moment, and when his gaze drifted to my mouth, I wondered if—hoped—prayed—he’d finally kiss me.
And then, Etta’s voice suddenly spoke inside my head. “Well, my God, darling, it’s the twenty-first century. What on earth are you waiting for? You can kiss him.”
I could. Yes. Yes, I could just lift my head and lean in and kiss Elijah Hamilton like it was a normal, ordinary occurrence.
Right. Like kissing Elijah Hamilton would ever be ordinary?
I’d watched him kiss that girl at the mall and was sure I’d memorized all the steps in his routine. He’d move in, grip my face between his hands, run his thumb along my jaw, and finally, glide his arm down around my body, pulling me against his own, all the while, peeking through his lashes to see if I enjoyed it.
I wasn’t sure when I decided—even what made me decide. I just touched my lips to his and waited.
It took a second or two. But then there was a sudden, tiny squeak from him, and I felt the pulse in his wrist leap under my fingertips.
And then, his hands were in my hair, angling my head just the way he liked it, his tongue brushing against mine, so soft it might have been my imagination...except imaginary kisses were never so intense. He kissed me like I was a song he wrote, lips wrapped around every word until it hummed with hidden meaning and promise, and his hands held me the way they held his guitar—like the music would stop if he let me go.

About Patty Blount:

Native New Yorker Patty Blount is the award-winning author of several critically acclaimed internet issues novels for teens as well as a few adult contemporary romances. She is inspired to write by such greats as Judy Blume, JK Rowling, and Gayle Forman. In fact, Judy Blume is the reason Patty elected to write under her real name…so she’d appear on shelves next to her idol. Patty adores writing; she’s written everything from technical manuals to song lyrics (see THE WAY IT HURTS, coming August 2017). Patty wants you to know she loves chocolate…really, really loves chocolate.

When not crushing on actors Gilles Marini or Sam Heughan, Patty can be found sitting in traffic somewhere on the Long Island Expressway, listening to audio books or talking wildly to herself about plots and characters. Prone to falling madly in love with fictional characters, Patty suffers frequent broken hearts when they all invariably prefer the heroine to her… go figure. When she’s not writing, Patty loves to watch bad sci-fi movies and live tweet the hilarity, and scour Pinterest for ideas on awesome bookcases. Patty lives on Long Island with her family in a house that, sadly, lacks bookcases.

Perfectly Oblivious (The Perfect Series #1)Perfectly Oblivious by Robin Daniels
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Perfectly Oblivious is one of those stories that is enjoyable for all ages. I received a free copy from ebooksforreview.com in exchange for an honest review. When I first read the book synopsis I thought this book sounded fun. I have to admit I had a few flashbacks to high school. I wasn't very popular the first couple of years and by junior year I was better known which apparently happens when you are one of the few with a car. I was still a student at a school far away from my friends that I grew up with who was basically putting in time until the end of the day when I could go hang out with buddies from the neighborhood. I managed to keep my feet firmly in both worlds and found house music which brought on an entirely new set of buddies. Well, Detroit House Music is an entirely different story but one of my true loves. Bea, or BeBe, as Cam calls her is sort of the same way, popular by no effort of her own, but, more by association with her popular and much-loved sister.

What is funny about BeBe and Cam is that they are in love with each other and both not willing to fess up. But, that is sort of how it is in high school. We never want to be the first to say we like or love someone. Unfortunately, Bea has what she thinks is a good reason for that. She appears to be cursed or at least she suffers from the same curse that a lot of sisters do. They like someone. That someone comes to visit or sees her out with her sister and immediately falls for the sister. Luckily she has a sister who has the same rules my sister and I had growing up. You don't date someone your sister likes or dated. That one was ingrained in me from a very young age by my mom. Bea's sister is a surrogate mom for Bea after their mom died many years ago and she has a really good head on her shoulders, despite only being a few months older than Bea. Well, she did some out of character things trying to help Cam get Bea to "see" him. What ensues is one misunderstanding and hurt feeling after another, well basically high school. Perfectly Oblivious is a great story for any age when they want to remember what it was like to fall in love in high school and it looks like it is the start of what promises to be a great series.

Six looked tortured. Common sense was telling her that it was best to just go back to her room and let him work through it, which totally lined up with her usual MO of avoiding, well, life. But for once she held her ground. “Okay, first please quit the martyr act. We are grown-ups who had consensual sex. I’m sure you’ve done that before, so don’t start getting weird just because it was me. Second, I’ll look at you any way I damn well please. You didn’t care how I looked at you when I was riding . . . well . . . you know,” she said, gesturing toward his shorts. “Third. If the only difference between you tugging at the corner of this towel to do something . . . urgh . . . hot, or sexual, or something and you walking out of the bathroom without kissing me good morning is the fact that I gave your company a check, I’ll cancel it. I’d rather pay you to help me, but I’m sure I can find somebody else if it’s the difference between us doing this or not.” Her knees were shaking and her voice was loud enough that she suddenly realized if any of Six’s team were still in the house, they’d likely heard her stumbled words. She felt pink spread to her cheeks.
She stepped toward the bathroom door, feeling like she was going to pass out before she made it to her own room. Her heart was pounding, and her head was spinning.
“Lou,” Six said quietly, his hand looping her wrist. “You like your lists? Fine. I’ll give you mine. First, I’m not being a martyr. We can’t build a reputation as a professional firm if I hook up with one of our first clients. Professionally, you must see how weird that looks, no matter how badly I want to. And what kind of message does it send to the guys who work for me? And yes. I have had sex before, lots of it, but what we did was much more than that. So please, for both our sakes, don’t minimize it. Just because I shouldn’t have done it doesn’t mean it wasn’t perfect. And for the record, how you looked riding my cock—and yes, you can say that word because, as you mentioned, we’re both grown-ups—was burned into my memory. And third, if it was as simple as just giving into this, you’d have been out of that towel and up on the counter with my face between your legs before you could cry out my name. It’s just . . . Shit, Lou. I’m trying to figure out what the right thing to do here is, and my duty wins out every time.”

About Scarlett Cole
The tattoo across my right hip says it all really. A Life Less Ordinary. Inked by the amazingly talented Luke Wessman at the Wooster Street Social Club (a.k.a. New York Ink). Why is it important? Well, it sums up my view on life. That we should all aspire to live a life that is less boring, less predictable. Be bold, and do something amazing. I’ve made some crazy choices. I’ve been a car maker, a consultant, and even a senior executive at a large retailer running strategy. Born in England, spent time in the U.S. and Japan, before ending up in Canada were I met my own, personal hero – all six and a half feet of him. Both of us are scorpios! Yeah, I know! Should have checked the astrological signs earlier, but somehow it works for us. We have two amazing kids, who I either could never part with or could easily be convinced to sell on e-bay.
I’ve wanted to be a writer for a really long time. Check through my office cupboards or my computer and you’ll find half written stories and character descriptions everywhere. Now I'm getting the chance to follow that dream.

Wildfire (Hidden Legacy, #3)Wildfire by Ilona Andrews
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow! I am truly in book love with this series. Wildfire is not exception. I received a copy from Edelweiss and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. It is the third in the Hidden Legacy series, and hopefully not the end because I would follow this series even if it moved publishers or was self-published. It is that great! Mad Rogan is just as mad as he ever was and Nevada Baylor is a character you cannot help but like. They are a great couple, though I just found it odd that she was resigned to the threats he made to her potential suitors. But, that does lead me to what I found to be a funny scene. I will not give all the details so it doesn't spoil it for future readers of the book but, Rogan kept reminding Nevada that she had already said yes to his question and therefore she could not change her mind and anything she said after that point which pointed to not agreeing with something Rogan said was met with a "you already said yes". It is one of those once you read it you will see what I mean about it being a chuckle moment and one of those where you get to see Rogan's softer side.

Another great aspect of Wildfire is getting to see more of Leon, Catalina and Arabella. Bern was in a bit more as well. There is not a member of Nevada's family that is not interesting and that I do not like. That even someone includes Victoria Tremaine. She is the epitome of evil but something about her makes me want to see more of her and see what happens between her and the Baylors and of course Rogan. Wildfire is part the introduction of the other grandmother and also has a great mystery. The husband of another prime has disappeared and who the client is makes the story more intense. Cornelius is back and he and his family add great color to the story, especially Matilda. We see glimpses into why she is important in Wildfire. One of my favorite parts of books is when I get the aha moment about why a mysterious title was given to a book and Wildfire did not let me down in that regard. I loved how the reader is introduced to where the title comes from in the story. I look forward to seeing more in this series as it is my favorite by the Andrews'.
Chosen: Gowns & Crowns, Book 7Chosen: Gowns & Crowns, Book 7 by Jennifer Chance
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Chosen is the third story in the arc for the Saleri sisters in the Gowns & Crowns series. An eArc was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Marguerite is the youngest of the Saleri sisters that took the Carolinas by storm when they took off from their homeland where they are nobility. Marguerite is still interning at the Cypress Resort where she is trying out all of the different positions and the owners love to take advantage of her title and hostess skills. She has seen Win around the resort and been attracted to him though he is engaged to Juliet who is not the nicest person and a terrible fit for Win who has been attracted to Marguerite from the moment he lay eyes on her.

Finally Win and Marguerite speak when they both try to help Mr. Holt whose family home is in danger of being lost. According to his family and pretty much every one in town, the Holt family pile is cursed. No one, including Mr. Holt, knows why. There is a lot of speculation but know one knows all of the details surrounding when the gardens started dying and after being replanted continued to die over and over again since the 1800's. Mr. Holt tried again 10 years earlier with the same result. He has heard the story of how the Saleri's were cursed and the curse broken and hopes that Marguerite can help him break the curse. She and Win grow closer while trying to save the Holt family home which is going to cost a great deal of money to bring it back into shape since it has been empty for dozens of years. They run into serious opposition from a busybody, ruthless realtor that wants the property and is willing to play dirty to get it. It is great to see Marguerite step out on her own and show her independence from her older sisters. She finds her own way in Chosen and the reader is in for a great read with interesting characters, even the nasty ones.
